Adult Formation

Grace Church offers a wide range of programs for adult formation and education on Sundays and throughout the week.

Sunday Adult Education Opportunities

Adult Forums

Sunday morning Adult Forums meet in the St. John Room (Room 312) at 10:15 AM on most Sundays. The forums offer opportunities for learning and growing in the knowledge and love of God. This year's forum schedule will be centered around the theme of Praying in Common. Adult forums are presented by a variety of speakers both lay and ordained, from with our parish and outside it. They are designed to enable and encourage participants to live their faith in their daily lives.  Check the calendar for a schedule and topics.

Inquirers' Classes

Inquirers' Classes meet from October through April in the St. Luke Room (Room 220) and provide an introduction to the Episcopal Church for newcomers and are also a great refresher course in Scripture, sacraments, liturgy, and the basic beliefs and practices of the Church. These classes are taught by the parish clergy and may also serve as preparation for adults who plan to join the Episcopal Church by being baptised, confirmed, received. They are also great for Episcopalians who desire to reaffirm their baptismal vows.

Parents' Forums

Throughout the year on the first Sunday of the month Grace Church offers special forums on topics particularly relevant to parents and families. Topics include prayer with children, keeping Christian festivals at home, parenting skills and challenges, and how to talk to children about difficult topics. Many of our parent forums bring in outside speakers with advanced training and skills in ministry to children and families. Learn more about ministries with and for parents and out Parents page.

Weekday Adult Education Opportunities

Education for Ministry (EFM)

Education for Ministry is a four-year program on the Bible, theology, and church history, with an emphasis on theological reflection on personal experiences based on a curriculum created at the University of the South, Sewanee.  Classes are offered on Monday nights from September to June.  Contact our EFM mentor Kemp Williams for more information.

TNT Bible Study

Members of Grace Church's Twenties and Thirties (TNT) group host a Bible Study on the upcoming Sunday readings each Wednesday night from 7:30 to 9PM at the 1823 Cafe at Virginia Theological Seminary. This event is hosted by TNT but open to all ages! For more information about Twenties and Thirties ministry at Grace Church, please visit the TNT page.

Small Group Bible Studies

We are in the process of organizing a number of small group Bible Studies to run throughout the year. Bible Study groups might meet on Sundays or weekdays, study the Sunday lectionary or work through books of Scripture, and require or not require preparation. If you are interested in attending or helping to lead a Bible Study, please contact our coordinator for Christian Formation, Mother Elizabeth Locher, at elizabeth.locher@gracealex.org, and indicate what times and types of Bible Study groups would work best for you.

Parish Library

The Parish Library is open to all parishioners throughout the week, especially between 8:30 AM and 12:30 PM on Sundays. Learn more about it by visiting the Parish Library page.
